Children's laureates reveal their top children's books
Children's laureates in the UK have listed their favourite children's books of all time, as part of the tenth anniversary celebrations of the children's laureate post.
Quentin Blake, Anne Fine, Michael Morpurgo, Jacqueline Wilson and the current laureate Michael Rosen generally favoured classics over more recent works, with just five of the 35 books on the entire record having been published in the last 20 years.
Two authors appeared twice on the list: E Nesbit, for The Railway Children and Five Children and It, and Robert Louis Stevenson, for Treasure Island and A Child's Garden of Verses.
Other books named by the children's laureates included Mary Poppins by P.L. Travers, The Box of Delights by John Masefield and Just William by Richmal Crompton.
The next children's laureate will be named on 9 June 2009. Children's laureates hold the post for a two-year term.
